Nice Paper Toys

The Papertoy Network!

On Tuesday, Oct. 20th we celebrated National Design Week in my classroom by having a Paper Toy Expo open to the whole high school. Over forty students came in at lunch to build Paper Totems. For many students this was their first experience building paper toys, but definitely not their last! It was so successful that the students are demanding that we do this once a month throughout the school year.

The students had their choice of most of the amazing artists that have participated in Dolly Oblong's artist series. It was a blast watching so many kids find the joy of paper toy building. If you would like to see more images from the event, please go to:

I'm so jealous of this! I wish I was still in your class. I need to get back into the game soon. I have some ideas, and some finished toys that just need a weekend for photographing. :) haah.
keep up the good work with NDW!

I print my toys on a color laser printer and use a 90lb index card stock. It holds up well to glue and folding, especially as beginners tend to bend things back and forth a lot. The toner cracks at the edges, but it is cheap compared to ink jet. I use tacky glue because it sets fast and a little holds a lot. We use x-acto knives and scissors to cut with, but to make clean folds we use scoring tools (also called burnishing tools). They look like x-acto knives with a ball tip instead of a blade. I get mine from Dick Blick.com and they are made by Grifhold (http://www.dickblick.com/products/grifhold-burnisher-set/) and have a variety of tip sizes. Handy little tools.

As for the patterns, I printed out most of the Totem Collection from Dolly Oblong's site and had multiples available for the students to choose their favorites and to mix and match. It was so successful that we will be doing it again next month. In December we will make Christmas oriented toys.

Scott--just straight up awesome. In getting my own kids introduced to papertoys, I've also picked the Paper Totems as the perfect mix of art and easy builds. I'm curious...to the uninitiated, it looks like you keep some X-acto's, straight edges, and Aleene's glue around...any other details you can mention? Certain paper weights? Multiple glue types? Scissors, tweezers? Do the kids pick out their favorite pattern from Dolly Oblong's site, or a collection you've built up?

Well done.
