Getting Started in the Industry

I've just had a few changes in my life and wanted to start in graphics/marketing/web graphics and was wondering if any of you artists that are making a living doing this work could throw out any pointers, tips, walkthrus :)  for those of us that want to get started in the field?

Also any of you artists in the Netherlands wanna adopt me;)

    Well, I've been doing this for almost a year and a half now, and I still can't believe how its taken off for me I get commissions (not enough to live on however) and shows etc etc, just stick with it and the world is your oyster.
