I am writing my university dissertation about paper toys 'An exploration of the evolution of paper toys and how the connectivity of the internet, the reinvention of craft and the ethos of free culture has enabled new communities of paper toy designers.' (needs work, but something like that). As I have been writing it, I keep refering to all the recent paper toys like the ones on this site, as 'Urban Paper Toys' and have no idea if this is actually the correct term for them. As designers of the toys, how do you refer to them?
Any help would be really appreciated, thank you.
I wrote it in 2007, when there was no NPT or a lot of designers (if I remember it correctly: Shin Tanaka and Sjors Trimbach where the 2 designers that did what I wanted to do).
At that time there was only papercraft (NOT papertoy) and because the Urban Vinyl scene was the very similar to what I wanted to do, I called it "Urban Papercraft".
I have never liked "papertoys" which implied that it's toys... and toys are for kids. And I don't see what I do for kids only.
If I would rewrite I would have chosen for "Urban Paper"
bs
As a collector or builder I call them, well toys, or models. :)
