Making it BIGGER!

I'm curious--from time to time we see some enormous builds from people--Nice Bunny's Riot Cop, Phil's Tank Tops, etc. I've gone to local copy stores to see what kinds of enlarging copiers they have and how to enlarge the letter sized templates I've got. They say they can't copy to certain weights of paper, or to the size I am interested in.

Do I need to talk to a real Print Shop? How do people enlarge the items they're building? Overhead projector? Putting each component on a different printout page? How do you enlarge your project without spending a fortune?

When i was in college 5 years back (strewth its been a while) and building cecil- my 1.5 m gundam based on masamune washington's 15cm plans, i got a bit ghetto:

Photocopy your nets onto acetate and project onto a wall with your paper stuck on. If you use a ruler to measure an edge (say you have a box that is 10cm on paper if it is 50 cm on the wall then its been enlarged 5x). Then just pen and ruler your design.

I only used this to get the outlines and used spraypaint for the colours (only just getting into surface design now...) but it definately works. I used mount board and gluegun glue to hold it all together. Had a 12 hr art exam to make it and it all fell apart at 6 because i was using double sided tape instead O_o.
