actually i just love the idea of making an online Tv for nicepapertoys.com. gonna send you my shout out for the future episode
  • Matthijs Kamstra aka [mck]

I love it... keep up the good work!
This is the first episode, and I already like it but as you said there is room for improvement

So here are my tips for you:
    1. film yourself more up-close: you are the host of this show and I want to see who is presenting it!
    2. when you mention the website url (www.blabla.com) it's very difficult to follow. You should use a subtitle to make it easier to understand. (perhaps something like the "chapters" you created)

I love to see the next show!

Great one Alexander, although I don't understand why I'm never featured in fun stuff like this :) For you first cast it's great and you feature a lot. That's a good start :) Matthijs has some useful comments. Here's my two cents:
-give the show an 'angle'. You can create some kind of a 'news-desk' with a poster of 'hot paper' in the corner, comb your hair extravagant, wear glasses and glue a moustache like you know stuff and indeed try to get something with subtitles. With a desk, you can get yourself surrounded with the toys you are going to talk about and just shove them to the front when talking about them. The overall image will be more 'tranquil' as well, so it's easier to focus on what the show is about: about toys.
-The sound is a bit of a problem here, but again, as an anchorman, you can have this nifty mic in front of you.
-Try to get some hot girls in the show. Tell them you are going to make them famous! :)
-Maybe get an interesting item in the show that will return in every episode. See the show as a format. You could get the camera outside and ask people in a mall which toys they like the most and make a little rating/item out of it. Or, since it's 'Hot Paper', burn the least favourite at the end of the show (outside please! :). I would come back for stuff like that :)
-a bit of research isn't bad. If you know which toys you are going to feature, why not email the creators? The might know snappy lines about their toys or be able to supply you with better photo's.
-Maybe you can wrap a show around a theme. Like this episode accidentally could have been a 'Halloween'-special. Or the next one could be 'automata', 'classics' or 'impossible to make. You can stylize your hairdo to this theme and make every show an event ('oh boy, Alexanders next show is out, let's check how he looks now, which hot chick he found this time and which toy will BURRRRN!').

Well, just have fun. If you have, the audience will have it too. Keep us posted! :)
  • Mr Chiba

i'd say take a leaf out of "toybreaks" book and get yourself a sofa
to film on, you would look more relaxed, and feel less self concious.
    good effort though.
  • bs

very nice i really enjoyed it. Gotta agree with some of the other comments though. The URL's definatly need a caption of some sort. and a couch or desk or something would make you look more comfortable.
Also think the hot girls idea is a keeper ;)
And i dunno but maybe Hot paper needs a mascot :)
  • Mystery Action

Great beginning Alex. Hot Paper is a good idea and you are obviously enthusiastic about the subject.
    my tips:
1 Like MCK said, close in the shot. A standing mid shot normally frames from the navel, meaning your hands drop out when by your side and come into the shot when you are using them to express something (or show off models). You could sit behind a desk or on a sofa- (but this normally means your energy will drop- and you want to keep the news fast and punchy!)
Don't be afraid to move around in the shot as long as you return to the original position.

2 Light yourself better. In episode one there is a light spot on the wall behind you to your left, that is where you should be. It is best to get bright/daylight shining on you from the front slightly to one side (ie from behind the camera) then use a lamp or a reflector to fill in the shadow side. if you have a second lamp place it behind you (out of sight of the camera) shining at the back of your head-this picks out your hair and stops the image looking too flat.

3 Use the Toys more. They could brighten up the background/set and you could edit shots of them in between items instead of jump cutting yourself while you practice the next bit ;)
Why not challenge the designers to make you some hot paper mascots to feature?

Keep going and I look forward to seeing the next episode!
  • Harold

well... seems that everyone is into the show man? i don't see why you should stop now! keep it coming!! it does need a lot of improvement but still, this is one hell of a great idea!! in my opinion... you should get another friend to host this program! making it more into a conversation, than just being a reporter (this is just a suggestion tho) t

i think that you should attend any presentation class, cuz this will help to improve yourself in speech delivering and help you to build your self confidence.

well dude! have fun... that is the most important element in hosting any programs.... keep it in your mind that popularity and fame is just a bonus...

    have a good time!!
  • 3Eyed Bear

Hey Alexander, what do you think about this one? I will make a paperkit as well if you mail me your mail-address (Maarten[at]3eyedbear[.com]).

  • Luke 'Glood'

wow! what do you use to make this?
  • 3Eyed Bear

Ehm, plain old Illustrator. This stuff always pops up around a kit I'm working on. :)
  • Luke 'Glood'

Ive been tring to create a good logo for myself but it ends up terrible!
  • 3Eyed Bear

What always helps is to define exactly the feel or function you are looking for. In this case 'Heat' (colour/flame/burned) of course, but less obvious 'playfulness' (H and T seem to be scared and 'paper' starts to jump in panic) and 'show' (stars). Also I always look to how it's going to be used, so I placed the two words on top of each other so they will fit the youtube format nicely and screenfilling. Last but certainly not least the logo should be readable even if you scale it down to bug-size. If this logo appears just a fraction of a second you need to be able to read it. Bold shapes always works then :)

Not that this logo is the best I've ever done, but with the amount of time I can put in it will do just fine I guess :)
  • Luke 'Glood'

    thanks
