Someone recently contacted me,
about the way I choose to lay out my models,
see below:
“nice template...but why the hell did you have to put all the blue writing around the template, I would've made it if it wasn't for that...what a waste of ink!”
And it made me think,
1. Why the hell complain about something you get for free?
2. If you choose not to make it, fine, it don’t bother me.
3. I think it’s important, that an unmade design sheet, should look like a work of art, I like to see people have put a little more thought into things, than they have too, it shows they care about them.
4. I know some of you may be on a budget, and see the superfluous as a “waste of ink”. If so DON’T build them, just appreciate them.
5. It seems some people are more concerned with voicing negative opinions, than anything positive.
Thank god for NPT where any criticisms seem to be constructive.
(I don’t know if my message came from a member or not)
Any one disagree with the above?
If so do it constructively
its a double edged sword really and it all comes down to what the artist wants to do considering there's no money being made imo. i see where they're coming from, but i'm not sure printing papertoys is the most important use of ink at all if you're that worried about it
your right! i normaby put nice background on my papertoys but then people wont make them! i do agree that i dont like printing thing with alot of ink going to wast so i edit the background out, leaving me more ink to print more artwork with i like the art enugh to find away around it, if people cant be bothered to use a brainsel to get what they want then they shouldent have it (i hope thta makes sence)
Printing costs aren't a concern for me - they might be for my bosses though ;). However I did cut and paste the 808 model onto a blank page to print that out even at work (still haven't put it together yet... one day). I would say that a lot of the people that come across your paper models primarily want to build the models rather than admire the stencils and using ink unnecessarily may factor into deciding whether to build your model or not. IF you are concerned by it putting people off building your models you could always put a note on your blog...
IF PEOPLE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT WASTING THEIR INK PRINTING THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN EITHER:
1. Copy/Paste onto a blank background
2. Don't build it
As I said, IF you are concerned about it (but why would you be).
I love it when people complain about FREE stuff. Really its not entirely free, there is some work involved with it. But someone else did the work and all you have to do is print, cut, fold and glue. And you have a nice little toy that you are able to do what you want with it. You can collect them, you can smash them, you can even set them on fire. But the people that complain about getting a FREE toy should really stop and ask themselves,
Hey did I design this? NO!
Did I create the template? NO!
Am I getting something for nothing? YES.
Did I leave a nasty comment for the person that put all the work into doing something nice for nothing? YES.
So what am I really doing? Just printing it out so that I can make a toy for FREE.
The world is full of naysayers. Don't let them get you down. Just keep on, keepin' on....

it's a slightly valid concern tho.
