It's the release of the massive, 10 inch tall Facebot!
I've been working on this robot for close to 8 years now... well, versions of it. In my quest to achieve awesome poseability in paper toys, I've gone through many methods of holding two pieces together.
The first facebot used ordinary magnets. The second one utilized a complex arrangement of neodymium magnets. The third one made use of the prototypical disk joint when I discovered how to make those (as seen in my Microbot design featured in the "Build Your Own Paper Robots" book) I even used cylinders and wraps for one version, but it was just too hard to get the friction tolerances correct for each part.
Finally, flat axles with the screw-in feature made this easy enough that I'm comfortable releasing a toy THIS BIG! Facebot will always hold his pose and always change it smoothly.
If you are an experienced paper modeler, build a Facebot and let me know how it went for you! Facebot is kind of complex, and I really need to know where it gets tricky.
