NPT Artist collaboration project

Hi all,

I have an idea for an awesome paper toy collectible display. I've been looking around to see if this has been done already, & don't see it, so here's the thought.

1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, & 8 Pawns.. 16 pieces per side, made up of 6 different toys. Yes, you guessed it, Paper Toy Chess.

This will require 12 Toys in total, & what I was hoping is that some classic existing toys can be redone in 1 colour, for example 1 side all red, & the other all white, allowing a few details for the face etc.

Soooo, I need suggestions on what toys could be best for which part, & 12 artists that would like to submit a toy to the project. About 3 inches tall for the Pawns & 4 - 5 inches for the rest. So pick a piece, & we can make the coolest chess set ever.

I think this would be a stunning looking collaboration for the talented artists that NPT has in it's members.

The toys needed will be: ( Thanks to Castleforte for choosing the color scheme :) )

Red King ---------- Grumm

White King ------- NPT Glue guy

Red Queen ------- Box Punx

White Queen ---- Boxcan

Red Rook --------- Fold Skool Hero

White Rook ------ Nani Bird

Red Knight ------- Hedkase

White Knight ---- Mini Boxcan

Red Bishop ------ Spiky

White Bishop --- Brickboy

Red Pawn -------- Victory Man

White Pawn ----- Paper Totem

  • Dan Watson

I think Grumm's would make good kings, like the idea =)
  • Greenelf

I think spiky's would make good bishops
  • Mike P

victory man would make a nice pawn
  • Sinner

I like victory man for a pawn. Is this your template Mike, & can you make the pawn :). I'll let you choose Red or White. I'll fill in which toys are which as they come in.
@Greenelf - Spiky's are classic so would be an excellent choice, will need to ask Shin if he can knock on up for the set :)
@Dan - I like Grumm too, got one of those on my shelves.

    paper totems= pawns
    brickboy/spiky baby= bishops
    mini box can/ hedkase= knights
    classic boxpunx= queens
    npt glueguy/shin king toy= = kings
  • Sinner

Oh yeah, we can't leave out glue guy in an NPT collab.

Ok, I've added a possible line up for the Chess Pieces. All classics. Now to see if the artists in question will produce a simple 1 color, one off template for the set. Im working on the Chess board itself, and the logistics of getting a mahoosive board made from a4 is a brain teaser, but i'll get there.
  • Paper Toy Adventures

Happy to join this project if there are any slots left . Very willing to do some modifications to my contender template to include a spear for the pawn or sword with shield for the knight. I'll post a prototype if you need to see how it would look like.

One issue though aside from the available slot. Since I'm fairly new to NPT, my stuff isn't what anyone would call "classic".

    Let me know.
  • Sinner

Oh thx for offering. The list above is only a possible line up. I know how the toy looks, & it will fit right in. If you would like to make the template, can you make it a white toy with basic features, & I will put it in a slot :) Cheers mate.
  • Paper Toy Adventures

Alright cool! Would you rather the template to include a spear (for the pawn) or a sword and shield (for the knight)? Is there a scale that we should follow? - Like what to use as maximum for the dimensions of the base and height?
  • Sinner

Im aiming to get the squares on the board to have 4cm sides, if that helps for base dimensions. I think a Shield for this one, just make the template white with a few facial features etc. Hieght wise, im think 3 - 4 inches, or 6 to 8cm if you work metric. Looking forward to it already.
  • Paper Toy Adventures

Oops, I just reread your post and it seems you mentioned the dimensions and limitations there already LOL.

Ok got it. I'll prep the template with the sword - ready by this Thursday at the latest. Should it be exclusive to this chess set or can I release it on my blog? Let me know, thanks.
  • Sinner

Well, my hopes for the chess set was to bring a few artists on NPT together to create a stunning piece of collectible paper art. The solo pieces are still the artists own work so yes they can of course list them on thier own blogs. Fingers crossed we get enough artists to complete the project. The board is almost finished. x32 A4 pages, IT'S BIG. :)
