becker&mayer!, a premier book producer located in Seattle, WA, is seeking a paper-based product developer/paper engineer. A key player in collaborative efforts to develop and deliver superior book-related products for the juvenile market, the Paper-Based Product Developer/Paper Engineer brings a bold creative vision, broad experience, and superb hands-on skills to conceptualizing, shaping, and producing interactives, removables, pop-ups, packaging, displays, and other inspired paper-based products and features. This individual's diverse skills, attention to detail, and creative energy contribute to both inspiration and efficiency within the juvenile group?and contribute to the success of the group's diverse products in the marketplace.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Originates concepts and packaging ideas for paper-based products
Develops drawings, prototypes, mock-ups, and other materials for proposals
Works closely with editors to clearly and simply detail (illustrations and instructions) assembly of paper interactives
Generates mechanical drawings and specifications to solicit pricing quotes; assesses quotes and determines vendors in tandem with Production
Develops design and manufacturing options for interactive paper-based features, packaging, and/or displays in tandem with Design and Production
Develops and upholds schedule from launch through manufacturing for paper-based components in sync with the master schedule for designated projects
Sources new vendors in conjunction with Production and freelance support
Supplements illustration for designated project
Experience and Education Requirements:
BA design-related degree required
10 years experience in developing high-quality novelty, interactive, paper-based product and packaging
Highly creative vision, innovative thinker
Experience with book-based products and other related products for ages 3-12 years a plus
Similar experience in designing packaging and/or displays for same
Extensive knowledge of paper engineering and design for a variety of book-related formats
Extensive knowledge of printing processes, effects, and efficiencies
Established relationships with Far East and domestic vendors
Established relationships with and extensive experience in managing freelance talents/experts
Expert with CAD; Adobe Creative Suite 3, including Photoshop and Illustrator, Mac OS X systems, and Microsoft Office Suite; InDesign skills a plus
Superior hands-on skills in building samples/prototypes
Strong illustration skills a plus
