Nice Paper Toys

The Papertoy Network!

Hey Gang,

How much do you know about PDFs? These things are really dangerous. I knew you could hide scripts in them, which is scary enough, but did you know you can hide executables in them? All kinds of weirdness like that.

If you're like me, you get most of your online paper toys in PDF format. Not everyone out there is nice like our community here. Just a heads up to be cautious about PDFs.

Anybody have ideas about PDF alternatives for distributing our toys?

Here's a geeky presentation all about the dangers of PDFs:

I tried to watch the video, but it just went on too long with way more tech detail then I was in the mood for. (I'm a geek, I code for a living, but that presentation just piled on the details without giving enough context to make me care).

So what's the takeaway?  Does it matter what OS you use? What PDF reader software?

Last time I heard of a actual PDF exploit in the wild was with Adobe's Acrobat reader.  I stopped using that piece of crap a while ago.

Is this a case o f "everyone is vulnerable" risk, or an academic,  under special circumstance, risk?

Alternatives to PDF might by png or tga files, if sufficient resolution is used.

Yeah, it's a long one! The takeaway is that PDF is the most vulnerable format out there. Readers do not report embedded scripts or even executables. Everyone is vulnerable, regardless of reader. Thanks for the feedback. I'm leaning towards png.

I've been downloading thousands and thousands of pdf's for over two and a half years now.

Never a problem and I'm sure members of NPT will ring the alarm when somethings wrong.

Don't worry to much and if ya do, don't watch this video.

Another great reason why the NPT community is important

This might only be a big problem when DLing PDFs from "Anons".

I won't say I'll give up PDF completely, I'll probably be more wary of where I'm DLing from, though.

But, PDFs are the best way to keep your illos looking sharp.

Agreed on all points

All my online toys are Jpegs. But I usually send files to clients via PDF - so nothing moves around when they try to print.

I had no idea about the dangers. O-o'
