Nice Paper Toys

The paper toy network

I'm curious--from time to time we see some enormous builds from people--Nice Bunny's Riot Cop, Phil's Tank Tops, etc. I've gone to local copy stores to see what kinds of enlarging copiers they have and how to enlarge the letter sized templates I've got. They say they can't copy to certain weights of paper, or to the size I am interested in.

Do I need to talk to a real Print Shop? How do people enlarge the items they're building? Overhead projector? Putting each component on a different printout page? How do you enlarge your project without spending a fortune?

Everything larger then A3 will be costly. I got a copy shop around the corner where they have a digital Xerox machine, so i can go with my USB-Stick and they can print directly from the file, in color, up to A3 size, up to 300g paper. Costs are quite ok if you only need a few pieces. I think with the copycard we got A4 (color) from file is around 0.55€ cent. I know it's more expensive if you just go there for one copy tho.
If you can't abuse someones company plotter, i guess that's the max. you can work with. Basicly there is no limit how large you can build with that, as even single pieces you can glue together with paper. Guess the limit will be stability of such a large model and time willing to spend. :)

Oh, and on the topic of enlarging graphics a few hundred percent i suggest using a professional filter that's not using the standard Bicubic algorithm. Personally i prefer Genuine Fractals from onOne, but there are others as well. Those plugins are quite expensive tho.

I'm glad I work with vectors mostly... :-)

yup, I agree. Vectors FTW.

I design everything in vector. I also have a 13x19 in printer. And I print out as many sheets as needed to fit all of my parts, when doing oversized toys.

I've also been working in vector--I just don't really know how to do it any other way, really--I think I'll be printing out individual pieces in the largest scale allowable by the printer width, the largest individual part of the template being the limiting factor to the enlargement factor.

Thanks everyone!

I have used this site (http://www.blockposters.com/) to blow-up images to poster size.
Perhaps this is usefull? I haven't tried it with papertoys yet.

I will try it with my overheadprojector this weekend and colour it with poscas [markers]...

very cool! Can't wait to see the finished model. What kind of paper do you use?

Wow. The "face" looks like it's the size of an A4?

I'd love to see how the body holds up .

When i was in college 5 years back (strewth its been a while) and building cecil- my 1.5 m gundam based on masamune washington's 15cm plans, i got a bit ghetto:

Photocopy your nets onto acetate and project onto a wall with your paper stuck on. If you use a ruler to measure an edge (say you have a box that is 10cm on paper if it is 50 cm on the wall then its been enlarged 5x). Then just pen and ruler your design.

I only used this to get the outlines and used spraypaint for the colours (only just getting into surface design now...) but it definately works. I used mount board and gluegun glue to hold it all together. Had a 12 hr art exam to make it and it all fell apart at 6 because i was using double sided tape instead O_o.
